Celebrating MCFS: a Significant mCDR Milestone

The ocean carbon removal community has reached a vital milestone. Puro Earth has officially approved the MCFS (Microalgae Carbon Fixation and Sinking) methodology, a groundbreaking and robust standard dedicated to utilizing microalgae as a scalable pathway for carbon sequestration. This achievement sends a strong signal that marine biological approaches are stepping into the forefront of climate solutions with the rigor and credibility needed to scale.

At Oceanid, we are thrilled to celebrate this groundbreaking development. Marine biological pathways have long been recognized for their vast potential to draw down carbon. The field has faced a critical challenge: the lack of strong, science-based verification frameworks. Without these, even the most promising innovations struggle to earn trust from markets, investors, and regulators. The approval of the MCFS standard directly addresses this gap.

By creating a transparent, verifiable framework for crediting carbon removal through microalgae cultivation and sinking, Puro.Earth has unlocked a new chapter for ocean CDR. This methodology provides clarity on how projects can be measured, monitored, and verified — ensuring that real, durable climate benefits are delivered.

We are proud of the Oceanid team’s contributions to advancing this effort. Our scientists and CDR experts have helped shape the understanding of the biological and physical processes underlying microalgal sequestration, and we have consistently advocated for high-integrity standards that balance ambition with credibility. Seeing MCFS formally recognized is a validation of that vision and persistence.

Why this matters:

  • Credibility for marine CDR — MCFS gives stakeholders confidence that microalgae-based removal can be tracked and verified with rigor.

  • Catalyst for scale — With a standard in place, innovators and project developers can accelerate deployment with clearer pathways to certification and financing.

  • A milestone for ocean solutions — This is one of the first methodologies to formally recognize a marine biological pathway as a certified carbon removal option.

We applaud Puro.Earth for leading the way, and we celebrate our Oceanid team for helping to bring this standard into reality. The approval of MCFS is not the end — it’s the beginning of a new era where ocean biology, backed by science and standards, can contribute meaningfully to solving the climate crisis.
